Description
- Giovanni Battista Ruggieri, called Battistino del Gessi
- Rinaldo and Armida
- oil on canvas
Condition
Relined. There are three small areas where the paint surface is lifting slightly. These are in the landscape to the left of Rinaldo's hand, in the bottom of Rinaldo's light blue drapery, and in the tree branches to the right of Armida's head. These are stable for now, but should probably be addressed. Despite this, the painting is in overall nice shape with lovely retention of paint surface, coloration and some impastos, and it may be hung in its present state (once the lifting is addressed). Ultraviolet reveals restorations and retouchings here and there. Most of these are along craquelure pattern with larger areas of restorations to the left of the sleeping Rinaldo and other parts of the foliage.
In a carved and gilt wood frame with minor abrasion.
