Condition

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting has been quite recently restored and if the varnish were to be slightly freshened, it could be hung as is. The canvas has been fairly recently lined with glue as an adhesive. The paint layer has been retouched quite well, and the condition may be considered to be very good. The varnish which has been applied to the surface makes full identification of restorations a little difficult, yet for the most part it seems that the retouches that have been added to the darker portion are very limited and academic, addressing small chips of paint. There appears to be no wholesale abrasion or paint loss, except for in the lower left corner on the pathway where a fairly significant damage has caused some paint loss. In the sky the retouches are very few and far between. There are some retouches in the lower sky in the center left and in the upper center and upper right, which have been employed to attempt to reduce the cracking. The work in the lower left corner could be improved slightly yet overall the restoration and general presentation is extremely good.
