Description

  • Jan Abrahamsz. Beerstraten
  • Dutch Ships on a Rough Sea
  • signed lower left on a piece of driftwood JAB. (in ligature)
  • oil on panel

Condition

The single panel is flat and bevelled on all four sides. The painting is under an old dirty varnish, which has discolored. There are some thinnesses, particularly in the sea and sails. There are some small discolored retouches in the sky, which are visible to the naked eye. Ultraviolet reveals aforementioned retouches as well as some additional retouches made to address thinnesses and reinforcement of the rigging of the ship at right. The varnish may well obscure other retouching from detection by ultraviolet. This painting could benefit from a light clean and updated restoration. In a carved and giltwood frame with losses.
