Catalogue Note

This painting is close stylistically to the works of Fra Bartolomeo and the composition may be based on a lost work by the artist.  The figure and pose of the Virgin, seen in profile, is close to that of the Virgin in a work by Fra Bartolomeo depicting the Holy Family with the Infant St. John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth in the Pitti Palace, Florence.
