The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com , an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. This painting on slate has cracked quite visibly in a few places and subsequently has been mounted onto a wooden stretcher. The cracks run diagonally across the top right corner and also from the center of the left edge to the lower right corner. The paint layer is quite dirty, the varnish is very greasy and the restorations to these cracks are not perfect. However, fully disguising these breaks is extremely difficult. The paint layer where it is not cracked, is lively and bright, and although there is what appears to be some staining in the sky and perhaps some weakness to some of the foliage, overall the condition is positive and will certainly improve with the right conservation.
