Condition

Canvas has been laid down. surface is clean and painting is presentable in its present state. the paint surface has been generally well preserved with nice retention of detail and only some slight thinness noticeable in the rigging of the boats. ultraviolet light reveals scattered retouches in the sky and a few in the architecture at left. there is also an area of retouching at lower left corner. In a very elaborately carved and gilt wood frame.

This painting repeats the composition of a painting by Claude now in the Musée des Vosges, Épinal, which was commissioned by Cardinal Domenico Cecchini (1589-1656) (see M. Röthlisberger, Claude Lorrain, The Paintings, London 1961, vol. I, p. 297-99, reproduced vol. II, fig. 208).
