Condition

Relined and under a very dirty, discolored varnish. in general, the paint surface has been well preserved and there is very nice retention of detail in the architecture and figures. the sky area is thin in some areas and appears to have had some reworking. ultraviolet light reveals some old retouches scattered in sky; the buildings, figures and water look good. this painting has not been attended to in a long time and would benefit greatly from a light cleaning and sensitive restoration. In a carved and gilt wood frame with nicks.

Catalogue Note

Canaletto painted this view of the Grand Canal from Santa Maria Carità, Venice, on a number of occasions.  Although there are some noticable differences, the present work is closest in composition to Canaletto's version in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen.
