Description
- Jean Baptiste Huet
- A Shepherdess in a Landscape with a Putto holding a basket of flowers
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Madame Ganna Walska, "Lotusland," Santa Barbara, California;
Her sale, New York, Parke-Bernet, May 15, 1965, lot 365 (as attributed to Jean-Baptiste Huet).
Condition
Relined. Two horizontal lines run across upper part of the painting from left to right and along these lines there is retouching and the paint surface is somewhat abraded. These lines may be a result of the canvas having at one point been folded over. The paint surface in the upper left hand corner has been pressed and is somewhat abraded. The painting is under a varnish, which is a bit streaky in the flesh tones of the woman. There is a small amount of abrasion along the top-most edge of the painting. A few more visible discolored retouches are visible in the lower sky but are not distracting. Ultraviolet reveals aforementioned restoration to upper portion of the painting as well as other retouches here and there.
There is a visible pentiment in the left foot of the flying putto.
Overall the painting presents a lovely image, and the painting may be hung in its present state.
In a carved and giltwood frame with chips and losses to the gilding.
