Description

  • Pierre-Jacques Cazes
  • Mercury Entrusting Bacchus to the Nymphs of Mount Nysa
  • oil on canvas

Condition

Relined. Under a slightly dirty varnish. Overall picture presents a charming image with nice retention of paint surface and coloration, particularly in the figures. The painting may be hung in its present state. As seen in the catalogue illustration, in the sky at upper left hand corner and at right a few very thin lines of retouchings are visible along the old craquelure, which is now stable. There are a few additional tiny discolored retouches here and there, but none of these are disturbing. Ultraviolet reveals some very small additional retouches here and there. There may be additional retouches that the varnish renders impossible to detect with ultraviolet. In a carved and gilt wood frame.
