Catalogue Note

Cornelis van Poelenburch belonged to the first generation of Dutch Italianate painters and he worked in Italy between 1617 and 1626. He is most famous for his small paintings, both on copper and on panel, depicting biblical or mythological scenes set in Italianate landscapes and bathed in warm southern light. In 1627 Poelenburch moved back to Utrecht and remained there until his death, except for the years 1637-1641 when he worked in England at the court of Charles I.
