Condition
The canvas has a firm relining. The paint surface has some pronounced craquelure along the upper and right edges but is secured by a thick dirty varnish. Catalogue Note
The present work is a derivation, in reverse, from an engraving by Cantarini found in Bologna, Pinacoteca Nazionale, inv. no. 2150 (see A. Emiliani, Simone Cantarini, exh. cat., Milan 1997, cat. no. III. 5, p. 317, reproduced). In the original engraving the angel is replaced by the Infant Saint John the Baptist who is kissing Christ's hand.
