Condition

The canvas has been laid down on board. The paint surface is secure and under a glossy varnish. Despite the glossy varnish, older and more recent retouchings and strengthenigns are visible under UV light. There is what appears to be a restored hole 3 by 3 cm lower left and possibly a restored damage to the left of the king's head. Offered in a painted wooden frame which has suffered some paint losses but is structurally sound.

A 18th-century copy after Van Dyck's original in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (see S. Barnes et al., Van Dyck, Yale University 2004, p. 475, cat. no. IV.58.)
