Description
- Portrait of Napoloen Bonaparte (1760-1821), full length, with the Wurttembergische cavalry besieging a russian town
- oil on canvas
Condition
The painting is less green in tone than the catalogue illustration. The canvas has an old effective relining. There is a restored hole to the lower left (8x6cm) and a restored scratch to the centre left (10cm). The painting surface, which has been quite recently cleaned and varnished, is in good condition. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals only a couple of spots of minor retouching.
Offered in a later gilt wood frame in good condition.

Catalogue Note
The uniforms of the Wurttembergische cavalry are clearly identifiable fighting against the white uniforms of the Russian cavalry, which would suggest the present scene depicts an action from the Russian campaign of 1812.
