Condition
The catalogue illustration lacks the colour and precision of the original: the painting is far less red in tone and much more colourful than it appears in the reproduction. It is unclear whether the reverse of the panel is original or whether the it has been marouflaged: in either case the panel is completely flat. Two superficial cracks are visible running vertically from the top edge; one on the curtain above the soldiers to the left of the composition (approx. 15 cm. in length) and the other above the arch to the extreme right of the composition (approx. 20 cm.), and there is retouching along these. Some craquelure (possibly caused by bitumen) is visible in the darker areas of the three soldiers at centre left as well as on the curtain above them. The paint surface is in good condition overall, with details such as her dress retaining its original impasto. Inspection under ultra-violet light reveals some strengthening to the deeper folds of the draperies of the women lower left, to the soldiers centre left, and on the curtain upper centre. The other figures are for the most part well preserved. The varnish is slightly opaque and the painting will benefit from revarnishing.
The later gilt wood and plaster frame is in good condition.
