Condition

The canvas has a firm wax relining. The paint surface is secure if a little abraded. Inspection under UV light reveals scattered retouchings and strengthenings. Offered in an elaborate wood and plaster frame which has suffered some knocks.

The composition derives, in reverse, from Lancret's lost original, L'hiver. The original forms part of a series depicting the four seasons which was engraved by J.-P. Le Bas (see G. Wildenstein, Lancret, Paris, 1924, p. 71, cat. no. 7, engraving reproduced).
