Attributed to Christoffel Jacobsz. van der Laemen

Anonymous sale, Christie's, 8 May 1964, lot 140, (as 'Kick'), to Norbury for 120 gns.;
Thence by descent to the present owner.

The support consists of four horizontal panels, each joined on the reverse by small vertical battens and the entire support is reinforced by thick battens forming a frame-like structure around the outer edges. The panel joins are visible on the front of the painting. The paint surface is largely secure although somewhat abraded in areas, particularly along the right hand side, and the paint is starting to flake in the lower section of the picture. There are scattered restored losses and retouchings and these are confirmed by inspection under UV light. Offered in a wood and plaster painted frame in fairly good condition.

This appears to be an autograph version of a subject treated by van der Laemen on two other known occasions. One of these versions was sold Amsterdam, Christie's, 14 November 2007, lot 207 and a second version of this composition was sold New York, Christie's, 5 October 1995, lot 127.
