Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is in good flat and secure condition with a central horizontal join. There is some wear to the top left corner. The paint is generally stable but a little raised along the horizontal wood grain, particularly through the flagon. There are 2 or 3 worm holes visible to the ledge, lower right, and some more in the background that have been filled and restored and have now discoloured. There are a few restorations to the flagon where minor paint loss has occurred, otherwise, the painting is in a good original untouched condition with extremely well preserved paint texture, impasto and glazes. The sketchiness and fluidity of the paint has been retained. Removing the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. Offered in a dark wood frame, in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This is a particularly fine example of the work of Cornelis Kruys, who was trained in Haarlem in the 1640s, where he became a member of the Painters' Guild in 1644, and in it the strong influence of Pieter Claesz. can be readily discerned. The handling is confident and the design notably well balanced, without the profusion of objects that characterises many of his monochrome banketje. The rather squat flagon must have belonged to the painter, for it anchors a good many of his compositions of this period, often, as here, combined with pewter dishes and half-filled glass vessels reflecting the light. Very comparable works, also including the motif of the crab, were sold London, Christie's, 8 July 1983, lot 26, and Paris, Ader Tajan, 12 June 1995, lot 105. After a brief period in Haarlem, Kruys moved to Leiden, where he joined the Painters' Guild in 1649, before finally settling in Schiedam, where he died.
