Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is in a good condition with the later addition of oak edging strips. There is some restoration to the edges where previous paint losses have occurred. The paint layer is in a good stable and well preserved condition ; under raking light the wood grain is pronounced and this has caused a problem because over the passage of time this horizontal wood grain has come to dominate and can be seen through the thin paint layer. Restoration, now discoloured, has been applied to reduce this effect in the past. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. Offered in a carved gilt wood frame with minor chips."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This is one of a number of similar marines that Van Goyen painted at the end of the 1630s and into the early 1640s.  His subjects are not set in the open sea, but depict fishing pinks and small merchant vessels in the choppy waters of the Zuider Zee, or the sheltered estuaries of Zeeland.

Sold with the certificate of Dr. Walther Bernt, dated 10 March 1955.
