Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. Oil on a cradled oak panel which is in a good flat condition. There is a central join along which there is some instability and old restoration. The paint surface is raised and unstable and there have been previous small paint losses, particularly in the sky, which have been restored out. The foreground and figures are in a better condition, although there is some restored loss to the water along the bottom edge, the paint is well preserved, the texture and impasto in original condition. The removal of the degraded varnish would improve the tonality. Offered in a burr wood and gilt frame, some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Dr. Klaus Ertz (see Literature) dates this picture circa 1600-1610, and suggests that the staffage may be due to Jan Brueghel the Elder.
