Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is cradled and in a good condition. There are two stable horizontal joins and one unstable horizontal split with earlier restorations. Under Ultra-violet light a scattering of restorations can be seen across the paint surface denoting previous small losses and areas of abraded paint where the ground colour has come to dominate. Pale shrinkage cracks have been reduced. Much of the paint texture and sketchy quality are intact, and the impasto is well preserved. Removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. Offered in a dark wood frame, in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

This is one a of a small group of early mountainous panoramas by De Momper, dated by Klaus Ertz circa 1595.  Dr. Ertz suggests that the figures are by Sebastiaen Vrancx.
