Literature

Probably, Archibald Phillips, 16, Conduit Street, London W.1., Inventory and Valuation of the Household Furniture, Ornamental Effects, Pictures and other items at Easton Neston House, Towcester, Northants., February 1927, typed document (Family Archive), 'Smoking Room, no. 3, Two large oil paintings of fruit and flowers £800'.

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas has been lined and the paint layer is stable. There is thinning of the paint to the background behind the tree, right, to the sky behind the tulips, left, to the darker passages at the bottom and to the base of the urn. Most of these areas have been reinforced. Some of the more prominent impasto e.g. the cherry highlights, have been compromised. There are areas where the paint is well preserved and these include the figs and their leaves, many of the flowers and the apricots. The varnish has discoloured and removing it would enhance the tonality. Offered in a plain gilt wood frame with some losses to the edges."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
