Description
- Vicente Lopez y Portaña
- Portrait of Maria Josefa Amalia de Sajonia, Queen of Spain (1803-1829)
- oil on canvas, unlined, in a gilt wood Empire frame
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The canvas is unlined and has lost tension but the paint texture and impasto are very well preserved. There is a scattering of minor restorations across the surface, particularly to the face of the sitter, denoting paint loss, and the remains of an earlier discoloured varnish. The colours are strong and saturate well.
Offered in a gilt wood Empire frame in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note
Another version, of slightly larger dimensions and which was formerly in the Lazaro collection, Madrid, is recorded in José Luis Diez's monograph on the artist (Vicente Lopez, vol. II, Madrid 1999, p. 113, no. P-445, reproduced plate 164); Diez however knew the ex-Lazaro painting only from a old photograph.
We are grateful to José Luis Diez for endorsing the attribution to Vicente Lopez on the basis of photographs and for suggesting that this is a secondary version by the artist.
