"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but raised. Under ultraviolet light can be seen a scattering of minor restorations to the robe and the flesh tones where paint loss has occurred and where pitted discolorations have been reduced (some of these are excessive). Overall, the painting is in a well preserved original condition. Offered in a plain moulded gilt wood frame in good condition."

When the present work was with Derek Johns, London, the attribution was endorsed by Dr Edgar Peters Bowron, who believed the painting to be an early work by the artist.
