"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but raised. Under ultraviolet light can be seen a scattering of small retouchings across the surface reducing minor paint loss to Tobias' right sleeve and left leg, the angels right leg and the foreground and pale shrinkage cracks to the darker passages. The dark tone of the foliage is dominant through the wing of the angel. Much of the painting is in a good original condition. Removing the discoloured and degraded varnish would improve the image. Offered in a carved wood and painted gilt wood frame with some chips."
