Description
- The Penitent Saint Jerome
- oil on panel
Provenance
Mevrouw Karel Ooms-van Eersel;
Her sale, Antwerp, Van Herck, 15-20/29-31 May 1922.
Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The soft wood panel has had previous worm infestation which has left obvious damage and an inherent instability manifest by vertical splits and deformations. The paint layer is unstable and there have been pervious losses, some of which have been restored. The paint to the shadow of St. Jerome and the body of the lion have been compromised. There is a scattering of paint loss across the sky and through the angel and some thinning of the paint in the cloud. Areas in good condition include the landscape, left, the trees and the rocky arch and some of the foreground. There would be a tonal improvement if the varnish was removed.
Offered in a modern gilt wood frame in good condition."
