"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The copper support is in good condition and the paint layer is secure and flat. The thinly painted background, ledge and candle holder have been slightly abraded and insensitively augmented. The green paint to the rose leaves has degraded and has had to be repainted, but this is clumsy and excessive. The paint is generally well preserved and the sketchy intention of the composition would be more visible if the discoloured and degraded varnish was removed."
