Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. The paint layer is stable and flat. There is evidence of minor paint loss and damage to the sky; there is also a tear, upper right, and two holes, all restored. Paint loss to the bottom edge, to the highlighted rocks on the path, lower left, to the figures and animals and to the water and reeds, lower right, have all been strengthened. There is thinness to the paint of the paler clouds and the red ground has become dominant in some of the more thinly painted areas. There are areas where the paint is in good condition where the texture is preserved. By removing the varnish the overall tonality would be enhanced. Offered in a gilt wood frame with minor chips."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The present landscape should be compared to a similar signed landscape by Janneck, which was also dated 1731 and which was offered Luzern, Fischer, 19 May 1994, lot 2078.
