Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but raised and cupped throughout. Where raised, the paint has been abraded exposing the dark ground layer beneath and this has led to extensive strengthening to these areas, particularly in the sky; although some of this is excessive and imprecise. The darker passages, noticeable those in the lower left of the composition, have been augmented after earlier over cleaning. The figures are generally in a good condition and many details of the boats and houses are intact. The removal of the discoloured varnish would enhance the tonality. Offered in a dark wood frame in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Two other versions of this view, with some minor differences, are known and both are attributed to Jacobus Storck, who is presumed to be the older brother of Abraham. One of these versions is in a Private Collection and the other was sold London, Bonhams, 7 December 1996, lot 147 for £125,000.

We are grateful to Dr. Pieter Roelofs for endorsing the attribution to Jacobus Storck on the basis of photographs and for his assistance with cataloguing this lot.
