Condition
"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
The oak panel is in a good flat and stable condition. It has a secure central horizontal join with slightly raised paint along it. There is minor damage to all the corners and a 5cm long horizontal split, lower right. There are obvious discoloured restorations visible across the surface. Vulnerable glazes to the hillside and windmill have been compromised along with those to the boat and its figures, lower left, and the wooded promontory. The rigging to the ship, right, has been strengthened. Areas of paint in the sky and the sea are well preserved. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality."
