"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas has an old lining and the paint layer is unstable and raised. The paint in the sky has been extensively repainted, most of this is excessive and unnecessary, however, there is some loss here. Likewise, some of the paint in the foreground, lower right and left, has been lost and compromised (there are areas where the paint medium has shrunk and frazzled) and further extensive and unnecessary restoration can be detected here too. The paint to the mid ground is well preserved, although the ground colour dominates in some passages. Removing the discoloured varnish and the over paint in the sky, in particular, would enhance the tonality. Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition."
