  • signed and dated on the trough lower right: E.V. VELDE/ 1625
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Acquired by the father of the previous owner in the 1960s;
Their sale, London, Christie's, 8 July 2005, lot 30, for £38,000.

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined to consolidate two horizontal tears, both restored. The paint layer is stable. The paint to the sky is thin and has been reinforced but even so canvas texture is apparent. The paint to the rocks in the left foreground has been abraded along with that to the shadows and the naturally sketchy paint on the right of the composition. Under ultraviolet light restoration across the surface can be detected, some of this is clumsy and imprecise making the condition look worse than it is. There are areas in good preserved condition, the colours are strong and saturate well. The varnish is discoloured. Offered in a black painted frame in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

At the time of the Christie's sale in 2005 (see Provenance) Dr George Keyes confirmed the attribution to Esaias van de Velde on the basis of transparencies.
