School of Provence circa 1670

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint surface is stable and flat. There is a repaired and restored vertical tear through the sky and down to the townscape, from the Madonna's red robe down into the foreground a vertically through the Madonna's hand into the foreground. Restoration along the bottom edge can be detected as well as losses to Joseph's pointing hand. The Madonna's robe is significantly augmented and there are a scattering of restorations to the sky and across the surface. Many areas are untouched and in a good original condition. The varnish has discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. Offered in a plain moulded bare wood frame in good condition."
