"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The painting has been recently re-lined, cleaned and restored. The paint layer is stable but raised in some areas. Under ultra-violet light can be seen evidence of restored paint losses and tears across the surface, particularly along the top, right and left-hand edges, beneath the daughter's left hand and the left arm of Lot and other areas of the flesh of both figures. Some of these restorations are imprecise, badly colour matched and excessive. Much of the paint is in good original condition, the colours saturating well and the texture well preserved. Offered in a black and gilt wood frame in good condition."
