"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined. There is a vertical seam to the right hand side with paint loss along it and to either side. There are some minor tears and accompanying paint loss to the lower right hand corner through St. John's feet and the background. The re-touchings to this area have discoloured. There is a very discoloured, degraded and opaque varnish obscuring the background but further minor discoloured paint losses are scattered across the surface. Generally in a good untouched condition. Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition."
