Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable but raised. There is restored paint loss along all the edges encroaching 1cm in to the composition. There are restored losses to the face and beard and a further scattering of losses across the surface including the top of the head. There has been abraded loss to those areas of paint that are raised, e.g. the mirror, revealing the ground beneath, and where this has become too dominant it has been reduced. Areas considered still in a good condition include much of the flesh and the red table where the texture has been preserved. The varnish is discoloured and removing it would improve the tonality. Offered in a gilt wood frame in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
