Description

  • Jacopo Robusti, called Jacopo Tintoretto
  • portrait of a gentleman, half length, before an open window
  • oil on canvas, laid on panel, oval

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The panel has split vertically causing a resultant tear to the canvas from top to bottom; an additional vertical tear, 12cm down from the top edge is visible, both of these are restored. There are further restored paint losses to the background, upper right, to the sitter's left shoulder and to another horizontal tear through the sitter's left hand and into the sleeve. The coarse canvas has been abraded in some areas and has been augmented. Under ultraviolet light a scattering of minor restorations to the surface can be detected. The varnish is discoloured and opaque and may well be hiding other minor losses, however, overall, the painting is in a well preserved state with good paint texture. The removal of the varnish would improve the tonality considerably. Offered in a plain moulded gilt wood frame."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
