"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The soft wood panel has been conserved in the past and has later horizontal bracing bars. Visible are several vertical splits with raised and blistered paint and resultant accompanying paint loss. The gold ground has been abraded and the ground colour is dominant. Discoloured restoration is visible across the surface where loss has occurred, the colours of the Madonna's dress, and the Magi's cloak on the right, have been significantly augmented. Much of the restoration is excessive, however, and with many fine details to faces and elsewhere intact, the painting can be considered in reasonable condition. The removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality. Offered in an integral frame."
