"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel has a 2cm addition along the top edge and a 1cm addition down the right hand side; the paint layer is stable and flat. There is excessive discoloured over paint to the background to disguise abrasion to the raised vertical wood grain here. Small areas of dark discoloured retouching can be seen to the tunic, lower left, and the sitter's left eye. The rest of the painting is well preserved and would benefit with the removal of the discoloured varnish."
