Description

  • Peter de Witte, called Candid
  • the martyrdom of Saint Ursula and the ten thousand virgins
  • oil on copper

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The copper panel is well preserved. The paint surface is sound and flat but there are visible minor losses across the surface; most of these have been poorly restored, e.g the red dress of the central angel, the flesh of the archer and the swordsman. Discolorations are also visible to the sky, the clouds and the crowd, and some of the shadows have been compromised. Many fine details and vulnerable passages are intact and the palette is strong. The tonality of the image would improve significantly if the discoloured varnish was removed. Offered in a 19th Century gilt wood frame with some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

The composition follows that of Pieter Candid's large painting of the same subject in the church of St. Michael, Munich.

Another version of this composition was offered De Vuyst, 18 May 1996, lot 412, as 'Attributed to Pietro de Lignis'.
