Description

  • Pietro Fabris
  • A wooded landscape with a woman resisting the advances of a soldier, an amorous couple beside them
  • oil on canvas

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined and the paint layer is slightly raised but secure with some compromising of the impastoed paint. There are visibly discoloured restorations to the sky, upper left, and to the edge, upper right. Overall, the painting is in a very good untouched condition. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. Offered in a plain moulded gilt wood frame, in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."

Catalogue Note

Fabris is better known as a vedutista and genre scenes by him are rare, except when figures are included in the foreground of his view paintings. We are grateful to Prof. Nicola Spinosa for endorsing the attribution to Fabris after first hand inspection of the work.
