"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The oak panel is in good condition and the paint is secure and flat. Regularly spaced holes along the bottom edge, perhaps tack holes, have been restored. There is pronounced horizontal wood grain, particularly noticeable in the sky, and the presence of restoration to reduce this, mostly clumsy and excessive. Some of the pale wood grain in the foreground has been reduced along with slight abrasion to the delicate glazes, but overall, the paint here is in a good original condition. The rather featureless nature of the sky would be improved by the removal of the over paint. The varnish is slightly discoloured. Offered in a dark wood frame with a gilt sight edge, in good condition."

Another signed and dated work from 1634 can be found in the Hermitage, St Petersburg (inv. no. 806). The Hermitage composition parallels the present work in its gentle diagonal running from right to left and in its broken wheel lying in the foreground.
