Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas is lined and the paint is stable but slightly raised. There is a restored damage to the neutral background above the painted wall. The naturally thinly painted, and therefore vulnerable surface, has been abraded in the past by injudicious cleaning; these areas have been strengthened, e.g. the foreground, the fireplace and the painting above it, the musicians and some of the darker passages. There are areas which are less affected where the paint is generally in a good condition and well preserved with strong colours. A tonal improvement would be achieved with the removal of the varnish. Offered in a moulded gilt wood frame, with some losses."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
