- bears initials lower right: AVO
- oil on panel
Provenance
Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, unknown date, lot 22 (as by Adriaen van Ostade, according to a label on the reverse).
Condition
The actual painting is a little darker and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The single panel is flat and stable and bevelled on all but the right sides. No damages are apparent. The paint surface is under a very dirty layer of varnish. The paint layer is quite thin, mainly in the darker areas in the background. Small retouchings can be observed in the standing man, in the background centre, and in the lower foreground. Under Ultra-Violet light the paint surface looks more substantially restored.
Offered in a plain gilt wood frame with moulded borders, with a few chips. (MW)
