Condition
The actual painting is softer and more green and less blue in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The panel consists of 3 vertical planks, and has been cradled. The panel is enlarged to the top with a strip of wood of approx. 4 cm, and is lightly bevelled on all but the upper sides. The joins have been reinforced with thin strips of linen. Two thin vertical splits of approx. 10 cm. are visible in the lower right corner and along the left join, and another one along the left edge. The joins have been retouched. Minor strengthening can be observed in the coats of both boys, and retouching is visible along the upper edge. The paint surface is under a dirty and discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is completely impeded by the dirty varnish layer, but there are possibly some older retouchings underneath the varnish.
Offered in a decorative carved wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
