Description
- Cornelis Jonson van Ceulen
- Portrait of a young lady, half length, wearing a blue embroidered dress and a pearl necklace, in a painted oval
- oil on canvas
Provenance
Anonymous sale, Amsterdam, Roos, 12 December 1916, lot 10 (as by Jonson van Ceulen);
H. Wetzlar, Amsterdam;
Thence by descent.
Condition
The actual painting is a little softer and less red in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The canvas has an old effective relining. Stretcher marks are slightly visible to the front. A few small repaired damages are visible to the background in the upper centre and to the left. The paint is a little thin in the hair, but otherwise, is well-preserved. A few additional retouchings can be observed along the upper edge, in her left shoulder, and in her dress. The paint surface is under a slightly dirty and shiny layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light is inconclusive due to the varnish.
Offered in a decorative carved and gilt plaster wood frame, with a few losses. (MW)

Catalogue Note
The elaborate and delicate lace work of the sitter's dress suggests that this painting can be dated to the late 1630s.
