Description

  • North German School, mid 16th Century
  • Portrait of a Lady wearing a black overcoat with fur collar and cuffs and a white cap
  • inscribed upper right: Here help mij. Dat ict/ Recht mandere vor Dij
  • oil on panel

Provenance

With P. de Boer, Amsterdam (as German, 16th Century, according to a label on the reverse).

Condition

The actual painting is softer and warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has a vertical crack running from the upper to the lower edge, but otherwise, is flat and stable. The crack has been reinforced on the reverse with some old, and some more recent small battons. The panel is lightly bevelled on the upper and lower sides. Another thin repaired and restored split of approx. 4 cm. is visible in the upper left corner. A few tiny flecks of paint loss are visible in the figure's coat, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. Some small retouchings are visible in the background upper left, along the cracks, in her hands and sleeve. Otherwise, the paint layer is in good condition. The paint surface is under a discoloured layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforesaid and reveals a few tiny retouchings in her face. Offerd in a plain parcel-gilt fruit wood frame, in good condition. (MW)
