Description
- Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt
- Portrait of a bearded gentleman, bust length, wearing a black costume with a white lace collar
- dated and inscribed with the age of the sitter upper left: 1620./ A: 36.
- oil on panel
Provenance
Bought by the father of the present owner in the mid 1920s.
Condition
The actual painting is warmer in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests.
The original panel consists of 3 planks, joined vertically. The central panel has cracked right through the middle, as is visible in the catalogue illustration. Both joins and the crack have been reinforced to the reverse with approx. 12 battons each. The panel is bevelled on the upper and left sides, and very lightly bevelled on the other sides. Another thin split is running along the central crack in the upper half of the painting. However, the impasto and texture of the paint layer is wonderfully preserved, particularly in the lace collar. A few small retouchings are visible along the crack and joins, in the upper left corner, to the background centre left, in the coat lower left, and in the lower right corner.
The paint surface is covered with a dirty and dull layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confims the aforesaid, and reveals no further retouchings.
Offered in a plain polished wood frame with a gilt fillet, in good condition. (MW)
