Description

  • Jan Weenix
  • A still life with a peacock, a swan, a deer, a dog, a monkey, a pheasant and other game birds, together with grapes and peaches in a basket, before a sculpted urn on a plinth, a man returning from the hunt beyond
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

The Duke of Buccleuch and Queensbury, K.T., P.C., G.C.V.O;
His sale, London, Christie's, 26 November 1971, lot 62;
Anonymous sale, London, Christie's, 20 October 1972, lot 22 (both the above as by Jan Weenix).

Condition

"The following condition report has been provided by Henry Gentle, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's. The canvas has been lined and the paint layer is stable but slightly raised with pronounced central stretcher marks. There are minor restored paint losses to the surface and some pin-prick size losses to the lower left still life and to the foliage. The condition, overall, is good with well preserved paint texture and colours that saturate strongly. The varnish is discoloured and its removal would improve the tonality. Offered in a modern gilt slip, in good condition."
"This lot is offered for sale subject to Sotheby's Conditions of Business, which are available on request and printed in Sotheby's sale catalogues. The independent reports contained in this document are provided for prospective bidders' information only and without warranty by Sotheby's or the Seller."
