Description

  • Barend van der Meer
  • A still life of pomegranates, grapes, a silver vessel, a roemer and a venetian glass on a marble table draped with a cloth
  • oil on canvas

Provenance

Anonymous sale, London, Sotheby's, 1 November 1972, lot 79.

Condition

The actual painting is a bit darker in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The canvas is relined. The paint surface is flattened and somewhat thin, especially in the upper right, but in stable condition. No damages are visible to the naked eye. A few discoloured retouchings are visible in the upper background. The varnish is dirty and discoloured. Inspection under UV-light reveals additional retouchings in the background and top of the venetian glass, the silver vessel and throughout the marble ledge and drapery lower right corner. The fruit in the centre is well preserved. Offered in a white gilt wood frame, in good condition. (JD)
