Studio of Jan Breughel the Younger

The actual painting is softer and less bright in tone than the catalogue illustration suggests. The single panel has been cradled and is unbevelled. Very thin retouched vertical splits are visible running from the upper edge through the centre, in the upper right corner, and in the lower right corner. The paint is slightly abraded in the background in the cartouche and in the green drapery of the Virgin, but otherwise, seems to be in very good condition. Particularly the flower garland has been wonderfully preserved. A few small discoloured retouchings are visible in the lower left corner, in the lower centre, and in the background upper left. The paint surface is under a dull and dirty layer of varnish. Inspection under Ultra-Violet light confirms the aforementioned retouchings and reveals a few additional small retouchings to the background, and some older retouchings underneath the varnish in the cartouche and in the face and figure of the Virgin and Child. Offered in a plain black wood cassetta frame decorated with painted stylised leaf scrolls, in fair condition. (MW)
